THE ROOTS OF FLY FISHING IN MICHIGAN

Fly fishing has ancient origins, with the earliest recorded techniques dating back to 2nd-century Macedonia, where anglers used artificial flies to fool trout. The sport evolved over centuries in England and Scotland, where it became both an art and a science—studied, refined, and passed down through generations of dedicated anglers.

In America, fly fishing took hold in the mid-1800s, and Michigan quickly emerged as one of the country’s pioneering destinations. The Au Sable River near Grayling became a proving ground for early American fly fishing, attracting East Coast anglers who recognized its cold, clear waters as ideal trout habitat.
