THE ART OF SPEY CASTING | MICHIGAN

Spey casting originated in the mid-1800s on Scotland’s River Spey, where anglers developed techniques to cast long distances without a traditional backcast—essential on rivers lined with steep banks and dense vegetation. What started as a practical solution became an art form, refined over generations and carried across the Atlantic to the great steelhead rivers of the Pacific Northwest and Great Lakes.

Here in Michigan, the Skagit style dominates. Developed on Washington’s Skagit River, this technique uses short, heavy heads to turn over weighted flies and sink tips with ease—perfect for swinging streamers and intruders through our cold-water steelhead runs. It’s forgiving, powerful, and deadly effective in tight quarters. For those interested, we can also introduce Scandinavian (Scandi) style casting, which uses longer, lighter lines for a more delicate presentation—ideal for summer fish or unweighted flies.
