TRIP OVERVIEW
SEASON DATES | TBD
Experience the thrill of a guided fly fishing adventure on Washington’s legendary Olympic Peninsula—where ancient rainforest rivers carry chrome-bright wild steelhead from the Pacific to their spawning grounds. Swing flies through classic runs framed by old-growth cedar and Sitka spruce, guided by an expert who knows these moody, weather-carved rivers as well as anyone fishes them. Whether you’re picking up a two-handed rod for the first time or chasing the grab that has haunted you for years, rest assured you will be in good hands.
OLYMPIC PENINSULA, WASHINGTON
The Olympic Peninsula sits at the far northwestern corner of the continental United States, a remote landmass of glacier-topped peaks, temperate rainforest, and some of the wildest rivers left in the Lower 48. Fed by heavy Pacific rainfall and glacial meltwater from the Olympic Mountains, rivers like the Hoh, Sol Duc, Bogachiel, Quillayute, and Calawah flow cold and clear through old-growth forest before emptying into the Pacific Ocean. These rivers are home to some of the last truly wild runs of winter steelhead remaining in the continental U.S.
Steelhead fishing on the Peninsula carries a history unlike anywhere else in North America. Indigenous peoples of the Quileute, Hoh, Makah, and Quinault tribes fished these rivers for thousands of years, building cultures deeply tied to the seasonal return of salmon and steelhead. When sport anglers arrived in the early 20th century, they encountered runs so abundant they defied belief—rivers alive with chrome fish fresh from the ocean, many pushing 20 pounds or more. The Peninsula became a pilgrimage site for fly anglers and the birthplace of much of the modern American steelhead tradition.
In the decades that followed, dam building, logging, and habitat loss decimated steelhead populations across the Pacific Northwest. But the Olympic Peninsula, protected in large part by Olympic National Park and the vast surrounding wilderness, remained a stronghold. The rivers here still host genuine wild winter steelhead—fish born in the gravel, not hatcheries—and remain some of the few places in the Lower 48 where anglers can legitimately target native steelhead on the swung fly. Conservation-minded guides, tribal management, and strict regulations have preserved this fishery against long odds.
Today, the Olympic Peninsula offers one of the most meaningful fly fishing experiences in North America, from technical spey water to deep emerald runs holding trophy wild steelhead. Its rich salmonid heritage, stunning rainforest scenery, and deep connection to the roots of American steelheading make it a must-fish destination for anglers of all skill levels.
