Northern Michigan River Fishing Report — Spring Steelhead | March 2026

Weather & Conditions

We’ve had ideal steelhead conditions across Michigan’s west coast rivers this week. Temperatures have been hovering in the low 40s during the day with overnight lows in the mid-30s. Light precipitation earlier in the week brought water levels up slightly on all three rivers, creating perfect conditions for fresh fish to push upstream from Lake Michigan.

The Pere Marquette is running at optimal levels with good clarity. Water temps are sitting around 38-40°F, which has the fish active and aggressive. The Betsie is flowing beautifully with that classic tea-stained water steelhead love, while the Manistee is running a touch higher than normal but still very fishable with excellent visibility in the slower pools and tailouts.

Fishing Report

Pere Marquette River

The PM has been fishing exceptionally well. We’ve been connecting with fresh chrome consistently in the classic runs and slots. Fish are holding in 3-6 feet of water with moderate current. Egg patterns in pink and orange are producing well, along with stonefly nymphs in sizes 8-10. Swinging streamers has also been productive for anglers looking for aggressive takes – black and purple marabou patterns have been our go-to.

Best action has been mid-morning through early afternoon as water temps climb a degree or two. We’re seeing fish in the 5-10 pound range with a few larger hens pushing 12-14 pounds.

Betsie River

The Betsie continues to fish well for those willing to work for it. The river’s smaller size means more technical presentations, but the rewards are worth it. Lighter tippet (4-6 lb) and smaller flies are key here. Sucker spawn and single egg patterns in natural colors have been our most consistent producers.

Fish are staged in classic winter holding water – deeper pocket water, runs with good cover, and slower pools with structure. Morning sessions have been best before recreational pressure picks up.

Manistee River

The Big Manistee is holding good numbers of fish throughout the system. With the slightly elevated water levels, steelhead are spread out more than usual, but that also means less angling pressure per fish. Nymphing deep runs and tailouts with weighted egg patterns and flashback pheasant tails has been the ticket.

The lower river near Tippy Dam has been productive, as have the classic mid-river runs. Swinging flies in the softer water at dawn and dusk has produced some of the best action of the week.

Fly Recommendations

  • Eggs: Sucker spawn (Oregon cheese, pink, peach), single eggs in sizes 10-12
  • Nymphs: Stonefly nymphs (black, brown), pheasant tails, hex nymphs
  • Streamers: Black/purple marabou, articulated leeches, woolly buggers in sizes 4-8

Tactics

Indicators are working well in the slower water, but don’t overlook tight-line nymphing in the faster runs – you’ll get more consistent hookups. For swinging, focus on transition zones where faster water meets softer current.

Outlook

With stable weather forecasted for the next several days and water levels holding steady, conditions should remain excellent through the weekend and into early next week. If you’ve been thinking about booking a trip, now’s the time. Fresh fish are moving in with every tide change, and the rivers are fishing as well as we’ve seen all season.
