WHITE RIVER, MOUNTAIN HOME ARKANSAS

The White River flows over 720 miles from the Boston Mountains of northwest Arkansas, carving through the Ozarks before entering Missouri and returning south toward the Mississippi. The most celebrated stretch—the 100-mile tailwater below Bull Shoals Dam—runs cold and clear year-round, creating one of North America’s premier trout fisheries. Fed by deep water releases from the dam, the river maintains ideal temperatures for brown trout, rainbow trout, and cutthroat throughout every season, regardless of the Arkansas heat above.

Long before it became a trophy trout destination, the White River was a warmwater fishery famous for smallmouth bass and catfish. Everything changed in 1951 when Bull Shoals Dam was completed, releasing frigid water from the depths of the reservoir into what had been a warm river. The Arkansas Game and Fish Commission responded by stocking rainbow trout, and shortly after, brown trout—a decision that transformed the White River into a world-class cold water fishery almost overnight.

In the decades that followed, the brown trout population exploded. In 1992, an Arkansas angler landed a 40-pound, 4-ounce brown trout on the White River—a world record at the time and still one of the largest brown trout ever caught on the planet. The state has maintained strict regulations on key stretches, including catch-and-release zones and slot limits, preserving the river’s reputation as the premier destination in the country for anglers chasing trophy browns. Bull Shoals, Rim Shoals, and Cotter have become household names in the fly fishing world.

Today, the White River offers exceptional fly fishing opportunities across more than 100 miles of public tailwater, from technical sight-fishing to aggressive streamer water holding trophy fish. Its rich insect life, year-round cold flows, and deep connection to American fly fishing heritage make it a must-fish destination for anglers of all skill levels.
